— One person died and another man is jailed following a wreck Monday evening in Myrtle Beach that rerouted traffic on Kings Highway for several hours.

Jared McRae Mahler, 25, is being held at the Myrtle Beach Jail pending a bond hearing on a charge of felony driving under the influence with death results, according to authorities.

Mahler is from Ocoee, Fla., and was taken into custody by police at the scene of the crash, according to an arrest report. He was booked into the jail at 3:20 a.m. Tuesday.

Myrtle Beach Fire Rescue and police were initially called to Kings Highway near 48th Avenue North at 5:40 p.m. for a wreck with entrapment and a vehicle on fire, according to the agency’s website.

A heavily damaged Chevrolet Camaro was on the median, slammed against a tree.

Two vehicles were traveling at high rates of speed headed south on North Kings Highway when one of the vehicles lost control and crashed, killing an occupant in the vehicle, said Capt. David Knipes with Myrtle Beach police.

Larry Church, a witness to the wreck, said the wheels of the green Chevrolet Camaro were still spinning and the engine was still revving after the car hit the tree, which was uprooted by the impact.

Police did not have any other details Monday evening and Knipes said the wreck is still under investigation. Traffic headed north on Kings Highway was being diverted onto 48th Avenue North, and southbound traffic on Kings Highway was down to one lane while emergency crews were on scene.

Knipes did not release any details about the second vehicle.

Darris Fowler, Horry County deputy coroner, confirmed he was on the way to Grand Strand Regional Hospital at 7:30 p.m. The identity of the deceased wasn’t available Monday night.

Anyone who witnessed the crash is asked to call Myrtle Beach police at 918-1382.
