Monday’s area sports briefs

Four area high school girls golf teams were among the eight that qualified for the Class AAA state championship meet via their performances at Monday’s Lower State meet at International Club.

Waccamaw (fourth, 353), North Myrtle Beach (sixth, 360), St. James (seventh, 361) and Socastee (eighth, 375) all qualified for the state meet, which will take place next Monday and Tuesday at the Hackler Course at Coastal Carolina University.

The top eight teams and top three individuals not on those squads qualified for the state meet. Strom Thurmond’s McKenzie Talbert (67) was medalist and advanced, and Academic Magnet’s Annika Bovender (73) and Bishop England’s Kathleen Sumner (82) also made the field.

CCU volleyball

Coastal Carolina middle blocker Kindra Bailey was named the Big South Volleyball Player of the Week on Monday.

Bailey had 21 kills with a .467 hitting percentage, seven aces, six digs and 13 blocks as the Chanticleers won a pair of matches last week.

CCU men’s soccer

Coastal Carolina’s Ashton Bennett was named to the Top Drawer Soccer and College Soccer News National Teams of the Week, while sophomore forward Ricky Garbanzo was named one of three Players of the Week by NCAA.com on Monday.

Bennett recorded four goals on the week to lead the Chants to a pair of wins at Campbell and VMI. Garbanzo had a hand in each of Coastal’s first three goals at VMI, scoring two and assisting on another.

High school volleyball

• Myrtle Beach 2, Georgetown 0 | At Socastee, the Seahawks beat the Bulldogs 25-18, 25-8 at the Region VII-AAA tournament.

Shelby Sheets had nine kills and four aces, Maggie Slabinski had six kills and Emily Wunder added 20 assists for Myrtle Beach.

Area golf

•  Spartanburg’s Todd White teamed with Mount Pleasant’s Lee Anne Brown to win the championship division of the 16th Annual WSCGA/SCGA Mixed Team Championship on Sunday.

The duo shot 67-67–134 to win by four strokes.

Murrells Inlet’s Cecelia Barksdale teamed with Jeff Abrams of Ladys Island to shoot 73-80–153.

Little River’s Rick and Linda Allison teamed to shoot 83-84–167 and took third in the second flight.
