Stony Brook-Coastal Carolina quarter-by-quarter breakdown

Published: October 13, 2012

First quarter

Key moment | Hosting the Big South Conference’s top team, Coastal Carolina needed to make an early statement against No. 11-ranked Stony Brook and it did that with an eight-play, 75-yard touchdown drive on its opening possession. The Chanticleers picked up a gutsy fourth-and-one conversion from their own 34 and senior quarterback Aramis Hillary hit junior DeMario Bennett for a 24-yard touchdown strike to cap the drive.

The man | Hillary had some trouble holding on to the ball late in the opening quarter, stalling one promising drive, but he nonetheless completed all eight of his pass attempts in the first quarter for 73 yards and that early go-ahead touchdown.

Second quarter

Key moment | Coastal had a prime opportunity to seize a lead and a little momentum heading into halftime, but the Chants came up empty as normally sure-footed sophomore Alex Catron missed a 25-yard field goal in the final seconds of the quarter. That left the score tied 14-14 at the break. It was only Catron’s second miss in eight field goal attempts this season.

The man | Stony Brook’s Kevin Norrell. The senior receiver finished the half with five catches for 106 yards and one highlight-worthy touchdown catch. Norrell turned back to snag an 18-yard touchdown pass -- seemingly hauling the ball in with one hand -- to tie the game at 14-14 with 8:14 left in the half.

Third quarter

Key moment | Up 21-14 late in the third quarter, Stony Brook had an opportunity to add to its lead as senior Wesley Skiffington lined up for a 39-yard field goal. But the Big South’s leading kicker -- who was 6-of-6 on field goals entering the day -- missed for the second time in the game.

The man | Stony Brook’s Miguel Maysonet. The senior standout had 101 rushing yards in the third quarter alone. The Big South’s all-time leading rusher carried the Seawolves down the field on a 66-yard touchdown drive to open the third quarter and punched it in from 2 yards out to give the visitors that 21-14 lead.

Fourth quarter

Key moment | Coastal took possession at its own 35-yard line down six points with 4:21 remaining and was moving the ball well until junior receiver Matt Hazel fumbled after a 4-yard reception deep in Stony Brook territory. Dominick Reyes recovered the ball for the Seawolves at their own 21 to end the threat.

The man | Maysonet. He finished with a career-high 233 yards in 26 carries and was key in the Seawolves’ go-ahead scoring drive in the final quarter. Pinned back at its own 9 early in the fourth, Stony Brook quickly got moving as Maysonet cut left and raced 64 yards on the first play of the drive. He would later finish it off with a 4-yard touchdown run as the visitors pulled back ahead for good 27-21 with 9:37 left in the game.
