Thursday’s area sports briefs

Myrtle Beach Christian volleyball closed out the regular season winning an exciting five set thriller against visiting Coastal Christian of Charleston 23-25, 21-25, 25-17, 25-10, 15-10 on Thursday. With the win, the Saints improved to 15-1 on the season and won the SCISA A Region 4 crown.

“We scheduled Coastal because we knew they were good and we would likely play them at some point during the playoffs,” Coach Alex Sing said. “I just told my team after we were down two games that we may find ourselves in this situation during the playoffs and we have to know we can work our way back.”

Mary Chandler Butler led Myrtle Beach Christian with six aces, Caroline Gore added five and Rebekah Bowers had four. Bowers and Butler also added eight kills apiece and Mackenzie Pearson added seven kills. Claudia Markley had 26 assists for the Saints.

•  Waccamaw 3, (at) Marion 0 | The Warriors come away with the win, beating Marion (25-21, 25-15, 25-7).

•  (At) Carolina Forest 3, South Florence 0 | Sam Barrett posted 10 kills and two blocks as the Panthers outlast South Florence winning three straight (25-14, 25-19, 25-17) and moving to 13-3 on the season.

Leaders: Sam Barrett 10 kills 2 blocks, Kasee Poat 13 service points 8 aces, Jessica Watts 12 service points 7 digs.

Records: Carolina Forest (13-3, 7-0 region).

•  St. James 3, (at) Socastee 1 | Hayley Settle proved to be a force, racking up 15 kills and 11 service points as the Sharks edge out Socastee (29-27, 14-25, 25-23, 25-22) in region play.

Leaders: Hayley Settle 15 kills 11 service points, Alexis Gunnell 5 service points 30 assists 10 kills, Courtney Settle 10 service points 10 kills.

Records: St. James (7-9, 6-3).

•  (At) North Myrtle Beach 3, Myrtle Beach 0 | Taylor Allman had 17 kills as North Myrtle Beach continued to roll, beating Myrtle Beach 3-0 (25-14, 25-13, 25-19) .

Leaders: Taylor Allman 17 kills, Moriah Jones 30 digs, Tara Hix 26 assists.

Records: NMB (23-1, 10-0)

•  Conway 3, (at) West Florence 1 | The Tigers edged out West Florence, coming out on top 3-1 (16-25, 25-22, 25-15, 25-21). After a slow start at 11-14 Ryley Hughes rattled off 10 service points in game 1 to give Conway the lead over West Florence 22-14. Kerry Elms recorded five kills, three of which were executed in game 4. With the win, Conway locks up a playoff spot.

• Aynor 7, (at) Mullins 0 | The Blue Jackets picked up their seventh Region VIII-AA victory, this one coming over the Auctioneers.

CCU Women’s soccer

•  The Coastal Carolina women’s soccer team scored two second-half goals less than five minutes apart to rally for a 2-1 victory over UNC Asheville Thursday afternoon in Big South Conference action at Greenwood Field.

Sophomore forward Kacey Kelley tied the game with her seventh goal of the season and junior Christina Stern provided the game-winner, giving the Chanticleers their fourth victory in five games. Coastal moved over the .500 mark in Big South play for the first time this season, improving to 4-3-0 in the conference and 7-7-0 overall. Asheville dropped to 3-12-0 and 1-6-0.

CCU Men’s soccer

•  Ashton Bennett scored a pair of goals in the Chants 3-1 win over Campbell on Wednesday. Coastal, now ranked 12th nationally, improved to 10-1-2 overall and 5-0-0 in the Big South.

Pedro Ribeiro scored the Chanticleers other goal.
