CCU Men’s soccer
• CONWAY Ashton Bennett had two goals, Kjartan Sigurdsson had one goal, and Justin Portillo had two assists as the Coastal Carolina men’s soccer team shut out UNC Asheville 3-0 on Saturday.
Sigurdsson’s goal (assisted by Portillo and Uchenna Uzo) came in the first minute and was his first of the season as it started the scoring for the Chanticleers. Bennett scored his first goal (assisted by Henrik Robstad) in the 72nd minute to give CCU a 2-0 lead. Bennett scored again, his seventh goal of the season, in the 81st minute and the assist went to Portillo.
The Chanticleers (9-1-2 overall, 4-0-0 Big South) finished with 28 shots (13 on goal) opposed to UNC Asheville (1-11-0 overall, 0-5-0 Big South), which had only three shots (none on goal).
CCU Women’s soccer
• CONWAY Sophomore Kacey Kelley tallied her sixth goal of the season for the Coastal Carolina women’s soccer team as it dominated VMI from start to finish in a 1-0 win.
The Chanticleers outshot VMI 30-2 to even their Big South Conference record at 3-3-0 and improved to 6-7-0 overall. The 30 shots are the most the Chants have recorded since they shot 33 against VMI in 2009. They also notched their sixth shutout of the season and held an opponent without a shot on goal for the third time. Freshman Faith Farley earned her first career victory, playing just over 82 minutes in goal in relief of junior Megan Spencer.
Amateur golf
Todd Hendley shot a tournament low score of 65 in the second round to finish at 134 and in the lead heading into the final round of the SCGA Mid Amateur Championship. The 54 year old had six birdies and an eagle in the round to shoot nines of 31-34. A lone bogey on the final hole, a 172 yard par three, kept the Thornblade Country Club member from tying the current course record.
David Sligh of Conway is in seventh place after shooting a 72 in the second round for a 140 total. Tee Opeerman of Pawleys Island is tied for 31st after shooting a 76 in the second round for a 149 total. Kevin Thompkins of Georgetown is tied for 48th after he shot a 75 in the second round for a 153 total.
The final round of play will start on Sunday morning at 8.00 a.m.
