Notre Dame’s Golson benched but active after violating team rules

Published: October 6, 2012

— Tommy Rees will start at quarterback for No. 9 Notre Dame against Miami on Saturday night after Everett Golson was benched for a violation of team rules.

Golson, a Myrtle Beach native, was in uniform and still eligible to play.

Notre Dame is 12-4 with Rees as its starting quarterback. But the junior lost his job to Golson after being arrested in May for a skirmish with police following an off-campus party. He was suspended for the season opener.

Rees has come off the bench to lead the Irish (4-0) to two victories this year. Golson has a pass efficiency rating of 121.06, placing him 98th in the nation.
