Tuesday’s area sports briefs

— The Socastee volleyball team defeated St. James in three games (25-14, 25-20, 25-23) Tuesday night in a key Region VII-AAA battle.

Samantha Speedling was 20-for-20 serving with six aces and also had two kills, three assists and a block to lead the Braves, who take on first-place North Myrtle Beach on Thursday.

“Tonight was huge for us,” Socastee coach Allyson Gordon said.

Nicole Currall added seven kills, three aces and an assist, and Alison Markley had 10 kills, 13 assists and two aces for Socastee (9-1, 4-1 region).

Hayley Settle had 10 kills and three blocks, Alexis Gunnell had 25 assists and five kills, and Brittany Ramsey had 10 service points for St. James (3-2 region).

High school volleyball

•  Aynor 3, (at) Mullins 0 | The Blue Jackets improved to 7-2 after a 25-16, 25-9, 25-14 win over Mullins. Katie Altman led Aynor with seven kills, five digs and three aces, and Shelby Culler had four aces, five digs and 18 assists. Sarah Altman added nine digs for the Blue Jackets.

•  (At) Waccamaw 3, Marion 0 | Senior Melaina Moore had seven kills, Taylor Foster had four kills, and Mags Grase had four aces as the Warriors swept the Swamp Foxes 25-12, 25-10, 25-8.

Mary Glazier added three aces for Waccamaw, which improved to 8-3.

•  Myrtle Beach Christian Academy 3, (at) Conway Christian 0 | Claudia Markley and Amelia Anonucci had five aces apiece as the Saints totaled 17 as a team in a 25-15, 25-17, 25-11 victory.

Rebeka Bowers added eight kills for Myrtle Beach Christian Academy (11-1, 2-0 SCISA Class A).

•  (At) Conway 3, West Florence 2 | Senior setter Ryley Hughes with 31 assists, seven aces and 22 service points to lead the Tigers past the Knights 25-13, 25-16, 22-25, 24-26, 15-5.

Senior middle hitter Bridgette Harper had eight kills and two blocks, sophomore middle hitter Kailey Williams showed very solid net play with nine kills and three blocks, and junior outside hitter Madison Gore had seven kills and eight digs for the Tigers. Conway improved to 6-4 overall and 2-1 in region play.

•  North Myrtle Beach 3, (at) Myrtle Beach 1 | Taylor Allman and Ellen Johnson combined for 31 kills as the Chiefs took down the Seahawks 25-6, 25-16, 24-26, 25-6.

Tara Hix had 26 assists, and Mariah Jones had 34 digs and 22 service passes for North Myrtle Beach, which improved to 18-1 overall and 5-0 in region play.

High school girls golf

• St. James 185, (at) Myrtle Beach 209 | Alexa Falvey shot 4-over 40 to earned medalist honors and lead the Sharks past the Seahawks at The Dunes Club.

•  (At) Carolina Forest 176, Socastee 198, Aynor 210 | Jamie Karl earned medalist honors with a 3-over 39 to lead the Panthers over the Braves and Blue Jackets to remain undefeated (10-0) at the South Course at Myrtle Beach National. Carolina Forest has two matches left and will host the AAAA Lower State Tournament at Myrtle Beach National at 12:30 p.m. Oct. 22.

• (At) Coastal Carolina 3, College of Charleston 1 | Uchenna Uzo Henrik, Robstad and Tevin Skyers each scored as the Chanticleers built a 3-0 lead en route to a victory over the Cougars.

Federico Bertele had three saves in goal for Coastal (7-1-2).
