Published: September 23, 2012

Cam Richards skims off the waves and spins in the air while surfing in Surfside Beach on Thursday, Aug. 4, 2011. Richards, 15, won the National Scholastic Surfing Association (NSSA) open championships held from June 26 to July 3, 2011, in Huntington Beach, Calif. He also got a three-year endorsement contract with Billabong. The last time an east coast person won the NSSA was fellow South Carolinian Mark McDandel in 1978.
