Bucksport

Published: September 23, 2012

Established | The unincorportated community dates back to the 1820s.

Origin of name | Named after Horry County’s first Henry Buck, a lumber entrepreneur and shipbuilder from Bucksport, Maine, who also established nearby Bucksville and played a large role in the county’s history.

What’s grand about it | Bucksport is set back from U.S. 701 between Conway and Georgetown. It is quiet and neighborly.

Major events | The annual Christmas parade during the Thanksgiving holiday brings back former residents who grew up in Bucksport but have since moved elsewhere, making the parade a kind of community reunion.

Major employers | Self-employed farmers.

What’s new | Bucksport thrives not on what is new, but on traditions and a way of life that has remained pretty constant for generations.

Property tax rate | 45.2 mills
