Saturday’s area sports briefs | Waccamaw cross country sweeps titles in Florence

— The Waccamaw High School cross country teams swept the boys and girls titles Saturday in the Pee Dee Classic, while a Warrior and another area runner took individual titles.

Reigning Toast of the Coast Girls Cross Country Runner of the Year Grace Barnett (20:06) won the girls race to help the Warriors claim the team title by 84 points after taking four spots in the top 10.

Amelia Jones (fourth, 21:25), Rachel Thornton (sixth, 21:36) and Jamie Barnett (10th, 22:18) were the other top-10 finishers for Waccamaw.

Carolina Forest’s Lisa Pieterse (second, 20:19), Georgetown’s Mary Cooper Jordan (fifth, 21:31), St. James’ Samantha Cunningham (eighth, 21:50) and Conway’s Madilyn Crabill (22:02) were the others of the eight area finishers to make up the top 10.

Meanwhile, St. James’ Billy Krier (16:44) won the boys event individually, and Waccamaw won the boys team title by 36 points with Jaz Greene leading the way with a fourth-place finish (17:17).

Carolina Forest’s Dustin Conklin took second (16:59) and Jess Patrick took eighth (17:33), while Waccamaw’s Robert Jones (ninth, 17:43) was the other area boy to finish in the top 10.
