Enthusiasm was high among the many heart disease survivors who attended the first Georgetown Satellite meeting of The Mended Hearts, Inc. The lunch meeting was held at Georgetown Memorial Hospital Education Center on Aug. 23. The attendees included heart disease survivors as well as medical professionals.

Ethel Richardson of Georgetown, was passionate about the new group saying “Thank the Lord – I’ve been praying for something like this to open in this area. Before this I had to go all the way to Charleston.” Trannie Moore of Georgetown spoke of her fears since she had a stent placed and was looking forward to the peer support. Angielin Ford of Murrells Inlet, quipped that she no longer eats cabbage since she had her coronary artery bypass graft surgery. Several more heart disease survivors, both men and women, spoke about the unexpected emotions that affected them after their heart event.

Medical professionals in attendance spoke about personal experiences with their family members as well. This group also expressed the belief that the Accredited Visitors program would ease their patients’ fears and help prevent hospital readmissions. Danita Vetter, with the Waccamaw Area Office on Aging, feels that Mended Hearts is a perfect adjunct to the Health Coach Program being formed in conjunction Grace Ministries’ Neighbor to Neighbor Program and Georgetown Hospital System. The Directors of Case Management and Case Managers from both Waccamaw Community Hospital and Georgetown Memorial Hospital are optimistic about the effect this support will have on their patients.

The Mended Hearts organization is open to people with heart disease, their spouses, family members and medical professionals. Members provide peer to peer support as they know firsthand the patient’s and family’s anxiety and concerns. One of the most important aspects of this group is its Visitor’s Program. The specially trained accredited visitor strives to resolve troubling questions, provide moral support, and make recovery easier for patients and families. Being able to talk with someone who has “been there” is of great benefit to patients and family members.

Future meetings will be held at Health Point Center for Health and Fitness, 12965 Ocean Highway, Pawleys Island at 6 p.m. the last Tuesday of each month. The next meeting is Sept. 25. A light supper will be served. Call Ruth Keilen at 685-3378 with any questions and to RSVP by Sept. 21
