First store in new development planning fall opening, sports bar relocates in Myrtle Beach area

Published: September 11, 2012

A popular sports bar that shut down in 2011 to make way for new development has settled into a new spot nearby, and the first store in the new development is preparing to open.

Spencer’z Sports Bar, which had operated across from Ocean Lakes Family Campground until April 2011, has a new home just south on U.S. 17 Business, in the shopping center that also houses Old Time Pottery.

Spencer’z, with a black-and-yellow exterior signifying the bar’s loyalty to the Pittsburgh Steelers, opened in the new spot in July and is gearing up for football season.

Spencer’z was one of several businesses at the corner of S.C. 544 and U.S. 17 Business that were torn down in 2011 to make way for new commercial development at that corner. A Kroger, Burger King and Baskin Robbins ice cream shop also were demolished.

So far, Walgreens is the only store to build on the site. The 13,467-square-foot store, with a drive-through pharmacy, is expected to open in October or November, though a specific opening date hasn’t been set, Walgreens spokesman Robert Elfinger said.

The Walgreens initially had planned to open during the summer, and it’s unclear why it didn’t.

Developers haven’t named the other stores or restaurants that plan to build there.
