SOCASTEE — Friday nights game proved this isnt your usual Socastee football team.
The Braves were able to break a 14-year losing streak to Conway with a 35-21 victory.
Our kids played hard, Socastee coach Tim Renfrow said. We knocked on the door last year and didnt get it done. We were able to finish it tonight. They got some good players over there in (Mykal Moody) and (Malcolm Green).
The key play of the game came with 10:29 left. Socastee was able to force a punt by the Tigers. Sawyer Jordan came through for Conway by pinning the Braves at their own 7.
On the first play from scrimmage, Socastee starting quarterback Hunter Renfrow took the ball over the right side and scampered 88 yards down the field. Renfrow totally flipped the field, setting the Braves up on the 5-yard line.
We talked about it all year long about starting 4-0, Hunter Renfrow said of the win and play. He ran me down and I give him props for that. It was some good blocking and I had a hole.
Tommy Lazaroff finished the drive off with a 3-yard score and Renfrow scored the 2-point conversion to give Socastee a 28-21 lead. The Braves defense and the rest of the team fed off that play.
After Conway returned the kickoff to the 45, the defense became a brick wall. Moody just missed the outstretched arms of Sawyer Jordan for a big pass play. The Braves defense would pick up two more stops and forced another punt.
I thought we had some opportunity tonight, Conway coach Chuck Jordan said. [Socastee] played better than we did tonight. We just didnt cash in when we needed to. That has been the story of us offensively this year. Defensively we havent been playing well enough to win.
Socastee took over at its own 40 with 7:39 to go. Renfrow scored from 1 yard out to give the Braves a 14 point lead 5:47 later. The highlight of the drive was a 36-yard run by Daquon Brown, who hurdled a defender.
In all, Socastee was able to amass over 400 yards in rushing. Renfrow led the way with 164 yards on 13 carries. Brown finished the game with 120 yards on 12 carries. Renfrow and Lazaroff had two touchdowns each.
Our offense did some great things, Tim Renfrow said. We had a lot of running backs did well and the receivers did a lot of good blocking tonight. We still have a lot of other things we can work on to get better.
