Jobless benefit costs borne by employers, not workers

Published: September 6, 2012

Re Sept. 1 article, “Jobless losing benefits”

The AP wrote the story and The Sun News writer Todd Garvin contributed to it. However, Mr. Garvin did not bother to correct Ms. Veronica Kozak of Myrtle Beach on the fact that she has never “paid into [unemployment] for years and now they’re keeping my money from me.” Unemployment taxes are a cost the employer alone bears. The state, with input from the employer, determines who will receive unemployment benefits. By not correcting Ms. Kozak’s comment, The Sun News helps perpetuate the myth that unemployment benefits are paid by the workers and therefore a right.

The writer lives in Myrtle Beach.
