N.C. non-profit co-owner faces federal drug charges

Published: August 15, 2012

— A co-owner of a Winston-Salem nonprofit substance abuse and mental health treatment center is facing federal drug conspiracy charges.

The Winston-Salem Journal reported that 41-year-old James O’Brien Lackard was arrested last week on a charge of conspiracy to distribute heroin.

Authorities say Lackard owns a car customizing business and told informants about ways to place illegal drugs in hidden compartments inside cars.

Lackard is a co-owner of the Ivy House Center for Self-Sufficiency, a nonprofit registered with the state since February 2007. The center provides substance abuse outpatient treatment and classes for those charged with driving while intoxicated.

Lackard remains in federal custody and faces a bond hearing Friday. It wasn’t clear if he had an attorney.
