Myrtle Beach man riding motorcycle dies, another injured in fiery collision with van

Published: July 15, 2012

A 57-year-old man was killed Saturday when the motorcycle he was riding crashed into the side of a van on U.S. 17 business just north of Ocean Lakes Campground in Surfside.

Logan Trevino of Myrtle Beach was traveling north on a Harley Davidson motorcycle when he struck the passenger side of a 2011 Toyota van driven by Patricia Wedge of Illinois as she was attempting to cross the highway. Trevino, who was not wearing a helmet, died of multiple trauma at 12:50 a.m. at Grand Strand Regional Medical Center.

A second person, also riding a Harley Davidson motorcycle without a helmet, spilled his bike onto the roadway and had to be airlifted to the Burn Center in Augusta, Ga., because of injuries obtained as a result of a fire at the scene.

The wreck resulted in the second fatality along that stretch of road in three days. On Thursday, an 18-year-old girl was killed when a car crossed the median and hit her vehicle while she was sitting at a stoplight.

Trevino’s family, which lives in Mesquite, Texas, did not want to comment Sunday.

No charges have been filed in Saturday’s accident, and S.C. law does not require anyone 18 or older to wear a helmet. The S.C. Highway Patrol’s MAIT team is investigating the accident.
