Murrells Inlet’s Byrd gets into Tour event as alternate

Murrells Inlet resident and Coastal Carolina graduate Zack Byrd will be teeing it up in this week’s $550,000 Utah Championship on the Tour.

Byrd flew to Utah on Sunday as the tournament’s fifth alternate and found out after playing in the Monday qualifier that he got in. Byrd shot 5-under 67 in the qualifier – which would have left him out of the field based on qualifying alone – but wound up getting in as an alternate instead.

Byrd has conditional Tour status based on his finish at the PGA Tour Qualifying Tournament and has played in three tournaments, tying for 62nd at May’s BMW Charity Pro-Am in Greenville and missing two cuts.
