Man remains jailed after shot fired into neighbors’ apartment

A Surfside Beach man remained in jail Sunday following his arrest on charges related to a gunshot fired into a nearby apartment.

Police arrested Richard Tillia Morrison, 31, early Saturday following the incident. No one was injured, but the shot did set off the sprinkler system in the apartment in the 1000 block of Hickory Drive, according to a news release from police Chief Mike Frederick.

When officers arrived at the apartment just after 6 a.m., they found three residents outside who said they’d called to report the gunshot. Officers located a man in one of the apartments who said he’d fired a round into his ceiling. He also told police he’d been drinking.

After obtaining a search warrant, officers searched the apartment and seized thousands of rounds of ammunition, three long guns, 11 handguns, two upper receivers, and one suppresser, commonly known as a silencer, according to the release. One of the handguns was a shoulder-stock, suppressed, fully automatic.45 caliber.

“All of the weapons and ammunition were seized for safekeeping, although both the suppressor and fully automatic weapon appear to be properly licensed,” the release said. Officers also seized a small amount of suspected marijuana and marijuana paraphernalia.

He faces three counts of first-degree assault and battery, one count of discharging a firearm into a residence and one count of simple possession of marijuana, according to the J. Reuben Long Jail website.
