James “Bonecrusher” Smith was once the most feared heavyweight boxer in the world, striking fear into the most brave and battle-hardened men.
These days, he’s making the same impact, but with his softer side.
Smith, who founded the Champion 4 Kids charity, is offering the second Summer Camp For Kids at The X Sports Complex in Myrtle Beach.
Smith, along with former trainer Michael Bivens and local amateur boxers, are teaching about 20 kids ages 10-18 boxing fundamentals, fitness and nutrition and life skills. Smith will also be giving a 3-round exhibition at the camp, which wraps up with Wednesday’s 6-8 p.m. session. The cost is free and parents are also invited to attend.
Russ Brown, who is involved with Smith’s foundation, said the camp was part of a boxing/golf combo camp last year, but the two have been separated this summer. Golf clinics are available every Tuesday and Thursday from 4:30-6:30 p.m. at River Oaks Golf Plantation, as well as match play events on Wednesdays. For information or to attend, contact Brown at russ@mbjgf.org, or 450-9034.
