PAWLEYS ISLAND -- Lowcountry Prep will once again be in the SCISA IV-A regional championship after defeating Christian Academy of Myrtle Beach, 63-39.
“I felt they were a little sloppy,” Coach Danny Bell said of his team’s play. “We are going to have to be a lot better to be a tough Palmetto Christian team.”
As Bell mentioned, his team will face off against Palmetto Christian Saturday at 1 p.m. at their own gym. The past two games the schools have matched up have gone to overtime with the Fighting Marlins winning both games.
“We have a lot more balance again this year,” Bell said. “Palmetto Christian is pretty deep so it makes for a good matchup.”
Lowcountry Prep used a 23 point first quarter to get things rolling in the semifinals over the Saints. Rachael Exum led the way for the Fighting Marlins with a game-high 28 points. Sydney Derrick had a double for Lowcountry Prep with 12 points and 11 rebounds.
The Fighting Marlins were in this same position last year but were a giant underdog on their own home court to James Island Christian. They eventually lost that championship game.
“We are a lot more confident and belief in ourselves,” Bell said of his team this year compared to the previous season. “Last year, we were the underdog in our own gym. Being the No. 1 school all year long we built on that confidence.”
