Vicki Bourus is taking over as executive director of the Georgetown Family Justice Center (FJC).

According to a press release, Bourus started at the FJC on the advisory board in Oct. 2011. She’ll be taking the place of Joan Meacham who served as the interim director for the center.

Meacham is returning to her full time career with Prudential Myrtle Beach, a real estate company.

She said Bourus is a good fit for the center.

“Vicki Bourus is a nationally recognized expert in the area of criminal domestic violence and Georgetown County is fortunate to have her in this position,” Meacham said. “I proudly pass the baton to Vicki who will take the FJC to the next level.”

Bourus was previously the executive director of the SC coalition against domestic violence and sexual assault. She retired from that position in 2011 after 12 years on the job. Bourus remains a licensed, master’s prepared social worker.

Since 1986, Bourus has been an advocate for victims of domestic and sexual assault. She has trained professionals in law enforcement, legal and medical fields to identify, assess and treat victims of sexual and domestic violence.

In the press release, Bourus said she strives to give a voice to those victims.

“I deeply appreciate the opportunity to work with the FJC of Georgetown County,” she said. “It is clear that this organization is dedicated to the partnerships they have developed within the community professionals in Georgetown who share the vision of FJC.”

That vision, she said is to create a community free of family violence.
