Horry County police arrested a North Myrtle Beach Intermediate School employee on an assault charge Tuesday after an incident that left a student with scratches, according to an incident report.

Police said Cisco Michael James Gordyk, 64, of Myrtle Beach, who is listed on the school’s web page as aide, is charged with third degree assault and battery third degree for scratches found on a boy at the school.

Teal Britton, spokeswoman for Horry County Schools, said school’s officials placed the employee on leave pending an investigation.

Police responded to the school after an officer reported that the child – the victim – had been assaulted by a school staff member, according to an incident report.

According to the report, an officer arrived at the school in the Little River section of Horry County around 10:25 a.m. and was told that a child had been assaulted by a staff member.

The victim’s mother reported that Gordyk had removed the child’s shirt and scratched the victim, the report said. The woman also showed police photos she had taken of the victim while the child was talking to another officer.

The child’s mother told police that the victim was in the nurse’s office because he had a strong odor of urine, and the nurse was trying to get him to change clothes and wash so he would not smell, according to the report. The officer then spoke with the victim, who said he was in the nurse’s office bathroom because the nurse wanted him to change, but he did not want to change.

Child told police that Gordyk had come to the nurse’s office to tell him he had to change and wash, the report said. Gordyk then pulled the shirt off him. He said he got his scratches when he struggled to get away from Gordyk.

Gordyk told police he had come to the nurse’s office to try to get the victim to wash and change because the victim was not listening, the report said. He said he knew the victim from the class where he worked, and that that was why he was asked to come, to try to and persuade the victim into washing to eliminate the odor.

According to the report, Gordyk said he stepped into the bathroom with the victim, who still had not attempted to change, and he again tried to persuade the victim. Gordyk said he helped the victim take his shirt off, but then the victim pulled away from him. Gordyk said he left the office and informed the nurse to tell the mother that the victim was not listening.

Gordyk was then placed under arrest and taken to J. Ruben Long Detention Center. He paid $1,000 bail and was released after being in jail for five hours.
