We lost a great lady of Grand Strand golf

We recently lost a great lady of golf, Frances Steere, who passed away late January after a long illness. Frances was the first female golf professional on the Grand Strand, arriving here in the early ’60s. She worked at many golf courses, including being the first head professional at Eagle Nest Golf Club and finally retiring as head professional at Azalea Sands. She was an LPGA Master Teaching Professional who made the game of golf both rewarding and fun for so many people of all ages and skill levels. She loved teaching well after retirement, always patient and always with a story to tell.

Frances had a long history of promoting the game of golf and made an indelible mark on the Myrtle Beach golf industry. Since the inception of the Myrtle Beach Golf Hall of Fame she had hoped that her years of devotion to Grand Strand golf would be recognized by such an honor. She was nominated but was never chosen, in spite of her many qualifications and support from the golfing community. While it is hoped she will still be inducted, her family and friends will never see her joy in being given such well-deserved recognition.

She was without doubt the great lady of Grand Strand golf and will be sadly missed.

The writers live in Myrtle Beach.
