‘Becoming Harriet’

In celebration of Black History Month, Brookgreen Gardens’ education department will present “Becoming Harriet.”

This hour-long solo performance about Harriet Tubman by Natalie E. Daise is at 1 p.m. Saturday in the gardens’ Wall Lowcountry Center Auditorium. Daise co-starred with her husband, Ron Daise, on the award-winning “Gullah Gullah Island” pre-school TV show in the 1990s. Reservations are required; call 235-6016.

Also while at Brookgreen, on U.S. 17 between Murrells Inlet and Litchfield Beach, across from Huntington Beach State Park, check out these exhibits: “Vanishing Acts: Trees Under Threat” exhibit through Feb. 26; “Etched In the Eyes, The Spirit of a People Called Gullah Geechee,” noon-4:30 p.m. daily through March 2; and “Birds in Art,” through April 22.

CCU welcomes Norwegian trumpeter

Norwegian trumpet soloist Tine Thing Helseth will perform at Coastal Carolina University’s Wheelwright Auditorium at 7:30 p.m. Friday, accompanied on the piano by CCU music professor Philip Powell. Helseth, 24, who first picked up the trumpet at age 7, has received numerous awards, including Newcomer of the Year at the 2007 Norwegian Grammy Awards.

Tickets are $10 for general admission; $7 for CCU and Horry-Georgetown Technical College alumni as well as anyone 65 and older and Osher Lifelong Learning Institute members; and $3 CCU and HGTC students, faculty and staff, and anyone ages 11-17; and free for ages 10 and younger.

Next week, CCU Theatre opens “Servant of Two Masters,” in the campus’ Edwards Theatre, with shows at 7:30 p.m. Feb. 16-18 and 22-25. Tickets are $15 for general admission; $10 for CCU and HGTC alumni as well as anyone 65 and older and Osher Lifelong Learning Institute members; and $5 CCU and HGTC students, faculty and staff, and anyone 17 or younger.

‘Lumber Schooners’ sail

The S.C. Maritime Museum in Georgetown will continue its first temporary exhibit, “Lumber Schooners,” which will continue into the summer.

This photographic display from the port of Georgetown at the beginning of the 20th century comprises 26 enlarged photographs, charts and maps that have been reproduced, courtesy of the Maine Maritime Museum and the Georgetown County Digital Library.

This exhibit tells the story of the lumber schooners, including the City of Georgetown, that sailed in and out of Georgetown from 1890 to 1920, with a collective millions of feet of pine and cypress lumber from S.C. forests to cities in the northeastern United States.

The museum, which opened in December after a 16-year quest by the Harbor Historical Association, is at 729 Front St., and open 10 a.m.-4 p.m. Mondays-Saturdays. Admission is free.

Fretz in benefit

Rocky Fretz, local pianist and composer known for his performances in shows such as “The Carolina Opry” and Brookgreen Gardens concerts, will perform “A Rocky Fretz Sunday Serenade.”

This benefit for Birthright of Georgetown, is at 4 p.m. Sunday at Pawleys Plantation Golf and Country Club, on U.S. 17 in Pawleys Island.
