Second man charged in robbery

Police in Myrtle Beach arrested a second man in connection with an armed robbery last month.

Desmond Shemaine Collins, 29, of Georgetown is charged with armed robbery, possession of a weapon during a violent crime and two counts of kidnapping. He is being held at the Myrtle Beach Jail, according to jail records.

Jonathan Manigault, 27, was arrested last month in connection with a robbery at 305 S.C. 15 in Myrtle Beach and is facing the same charges.

On Jan. 13, two people entered a store on S.C. 15, showed a store employee their handguns and demanded money, according to a Myrtle Beach Police report. The robbers made the employee lie on the floor and they zip-tied his hands behind his back, along with those of another employee who emerged from the back of the store.

The robbers emptied the first store employee’s pockets and took several items form the store, along with an unknown amount of money.

Collins was arrested Saturday night at 6010 Dick Pond Road in Socastee.

Manigault is being held in lieu of $50,000 at J. Reuben Long Detention Center.

Free mulch available

Free mulch, made from recycled Christmas trees and wreaths, is now available in North Myrtle Beach.

There are two places where the mulch can be picked up: the parking lot across the street from the J. Bryan Floyd Community Center at 1030 Possum Trot Road, or the public parking lot on Main Street across from Duck’s Beach Club.

According to a press release from the city, signs are posted at both parking lots, and the mulch can be picked up as long as the supply lasts.

PAWLEYS ISLAND

Black History event scheduled

The Pawleys Island Child Development Center's second annual Black History Month event is scheduled for 7 p.m. Feb. 16 at Holy Cross Faith Memorial Episcopal Church in Pawleys Island, and will feature historian, teacher and literacy advocate Tracy Swinton Bailey.

Bailey is the founder and director of The Freedom Readers Program in Horry County. The program is designed to improve the reading skills in low-income communities by providing one-on-one literacy tutoring, free books and an environment that inspires learning.

Her presentation will honor the life and work of Marian Wright Edelman, author of “The Sea is so Wide and My Boat is So Small.”

Edelman is from Bennettsville and is the founder and director of the Children’s Defense Fund, which works to secure a positive start in life for children, and help them make successful passages into adulthood with the help of caring families and communities.

The Men of Zion Singers and Praise Dancers are also on the evening’s itinerary. A reception will be held after the program and everyone is invited to attend.

Attendance is free but seating is limited. RSVP to 237-4765.
