Saturday’s area sports briefs: St. James wrestling has nine individual region champs

GEORGETOWN -- Nine members of the St. James wrestling team won the individual Region VII-AAA championships at Georgetown on Saturday.

The region champions for St. James include: Alex Nielsen (115), Mason Elliott (128), Jamie Bolduc (134), Codi Rothermel (140), John VanSlooten (147), Derek Rothermel (154), Gregg Johnsen (170), Deeante Salaam (184) and Austin Brown (220).

St. James’ Tyler Young took second place at 108 behind Socastee’s Justin Nipper, John Delbianco was second at 122 behind Myrtle Beach’s Joey Smalls, Hunter Brandon finished second behind Georgetown’s Jalil Smith, and the Sharks’ Nick Juretic (162) and Tim Rector (heavyweight) placed third in their classes.

All 14 St. James wrestlers qualified for the Lower State championships.

CCU track and field

The Coastal Carolina men’s and women’s indoor track and field teams combined for 13 top-10 finishes Saturday at the 17-team Sykes-Saboch Invitational Challenge.

Erica Peake paced the women – who had nine top 10s – with a runner-up finish in the 60 meters (7.57) and 200 (24.41).

The CCU women’s 1,600-meter relay team Peake, Jamison, Sharmaine Barnes, Qwontajah Thompson – set a school indoor record with a 3:48.42, sixth-place finish.

Other CCU women with top 10s were: Gabrielle Lee (60m, ninth, 7.71); Letitia Saayman (5,000, fourth, 17:20.31); Sophie Perry (mile, eighth, 4:49.88); Mary Lawrence (pole vault, fifth, 12 feet, 1 inch); Kierra Gabe (high jump, seventh, 5-5); and Santresa Jamison (400, ninth, 56.79).

Tyler Askew – who took third in the 60 meters (6.84) and fourth in the long jump (23-6.3/4) – paced the men.

Shane Norris took eighth in the 60-meter hurdles (8.360 and Reggie was 10th in the high jump (6-83/4).

• (At) South Carolina Warriors 118, Fayetteville (N.C.) Crossover 83 | Joseph Harris had 24 points and eight rebounds in his return to the Warriors and Tony White added 19 points and eight assists as the first-year squad improved to 15-0 with a victory over the Crossover, who play in the Tobacco Road Basketball League.
