Homeless Horry County man burnt in overnight fire

A Horry County man is now at the Burn Center in Augusta, Ga. after an overnight fire.

Horry County police responded to Robert Grissom Parkway near Executive Avenue where the 47 year old man was found sitting in the middle of the road. A county incident report said the man was homeless and had severe burns on both of his legs and his buttocks.

The man had been asleep at a campsite and awoke to flames. The report said the fire occurred just after midnight Friday morning.

Similar stories:

A 52 year old homeless woman had started cooking at the campsite when the fire started, the report said, but officers said she was so intoxicated she was unable to say how the fire started.

Both were transported to Grand Strand Medical Center.

At the hospital, officers learned the whole length of the man’s left leg was burnt. The damage to his right leg was mainly below his knee cap. The wounds were so severe he was flown to the Augusta, Ga. for treatment, the report said.

The man told officers he had drunk a pint of alcohol before falling asleep and did not know long he had been out before the fire started.

According to the report, the fire started about four feet f rom where the man had been sleeping.

No charges have been filed at this time.
