A two-alarm fire destroyed the Festiva Welcome Center located on U.S. 501 near Conway.

Leslie Yancey, Horry County Fire Rescue spokeswoman, said officials were in “overhaul mode” at the scene which tied up traffic Friday morning.

The southbound lanes were closed to all traffic around 10:30 a.m. from Waccamaw drive at the Waccamaw River to S.C. 544. Motorists were diverted to a northbound lane of U.S. 501. The road didn’t reopen until about 1 p.m. that afternoon.

The fire was reported to authorities at 9:52 a.m. Friday at the center located at 806 E. U.S. 501, which is located just east of the Waccamaw River, said Leslie Yancey, Horry County Fire Rescue spokeswoman. The fire was controlled though the building was destroyed.

When firefighters arrived they found smoke coming from the building, she said.

Conway and Myrtle Beach firefighters provided mutual aid to Horry County Fire Rescue, Yancey said.

Around 5 p.m. Yancey said investigators still didn’t know what sparked the fire.
