Paterno legacy includes Sandusky

Re Joe Paterno headline

Sports fans can repeat back statistics until they are blue in the face. Joe Paterno may have been a great coach, and he may have been, for the most part, a wonderful human being. But none of that excuses his actions with regards to Jerry Sandusky. I am comfortable with Paterno’s obituary focusing more on the circumstances of his death than turning into a long narrative about the Penn State scandal, but if Paterno had wanted his obituary to remain a spotless tribute to his accomplishments, he should have made an effort to protect those children.

Mount Myrtle demise all positive

Re the demise of Mount Myrtle

Relationships blossomed, new friendships were formed, a laugh or two shared, a grass-roots organization benefited, entertainment was provided to those who chose to attend. In other words, no harm was done. Sounds like a terrible community.

I think it beats the devil out of the misanthropy spewed within the Republican Party, to each other and especially to anyone different (take that any way you choose).

Bob Bestler

Only 7 Democrats in Horry County?

There we go again. Bob Bestler, in his Jan. 28 column reiterated that there are only seven democrats in the county, and all of them were there to demolish the sand sculpture. Well, I am a Democrat and I was not there, and there are thousands of democrats like me in Horry County, many of whom do not identify themselves as democrats.

Maybe he moved out of Horry County when he discovered a new Democrat outside his count, since he claims to be a Democrat. By making such a statement, he denigrates Horry as a single party county, which it is not. For a healthy democracy, it is necessary to have multiparty system with at least two major parties. Otherwise, it would look like China or the old Soviet Union.

Maybe Mr. Bestler has only seven fingers on his hands? (A bad joke!) His assertion of “seven Democrats” in the county is meant to be a joke. But it is also a bad joke, and now it has become corny. I hope he refrains from using this joke again.

Carolina Forest

Incorporation the answer to complaints

Re Carolina Forest resident ire

Ire should belong to those of us who pay taxes not only in Horry County, but Conway and Myrtle Beach as well. The Jan. 28 article referring to Dennis DiSabato of Carolina Forest and his complaint related to “infrastructure needs” in his area of the county seems to be an insult to citizens of the two communities that are affected by the same congestion as well as bearing other expenses related to extreme growth in Carolina Forest.

Carolina Forest should regroup and become a city in itself if residents want to dictate or expect priority in any kind of public scheduling. This area is costing our citizens in these two cities when we should only be neighbors except in matters for which Carolina Forest might pay to use. This seems to be just cheap advertisement for someone’s dream of becoming the congressman from the District 56 House.

We all need to object to Mr. DiSabato’s possibly costing the taxpayers any additional money to spur on the Department of Transportation. Common sense should tell us the scheduled time of 2013 will be here before he would accomplish anything. Therefore, we might as well wait another 14 months.
