Reported inmate escape was false alarm

J. Reuben Long Detention Center was locked down for about 40 minutes on Thursday after someone reported an escaped inmate.

Lisa Bourcier, spokeswoman for Horry County, said a worker in an office at Home Health Services called the Detention Center around 2:17 p.m. and said they saw a man wearing what appeared to be an orange jumpsuit by a dumpster behind the county’s agriculture building.

County officials locked down the jail pending an investigation by the Horry County Police and a bloodhound tracking team.

Officers interviewed the witness and were unable to substantiate the sighting.

Inmate counts at the facility and job sites were accurate with no missing persons.

An Horry County grand jury indicted a teen on sexual assault charges stemming from an incident in Conway High School parking lot, according to court records.

Lane turned himself in to police on Oct. 3 to face the charge and he has been free on $5,000 bail. Conway police were called about 9 p.m. Sept. 27 to Conway Medical Center for a woman in the emergency room who had been sexually assaulted, police said. The woman told police Lane assaulted her after she met him at his vehicle during lunch at Conway High School.

CAB approves new restaurant design

Myrtle Beach’s Community Appearance Board on Thursday gave the final OK to the design for Bandito’s, a new Mexican-themed restaurant being built in the 1400 block of North Ocean Boulevard.

Bandito’s, the $1.5 million eatery being developed by Coastal Dining and Entertainment, will replace the old Breakwater Inn motel buildings. It’s being designed by Jim Hubbard of Pegram Associates, and construction is already under way at the site. The Breakwater Inn has been torn down already, because Coastal Dining has said it intends to open Bandito’s by early May.

The appearance board reviewed the initial designs a few weeks ago, and had no serious reservations about the design.

At Thursday’s meeting, appearance board members voted unanimously in favor of the building, which has a hacienda-style design with a tile roof. Hubbard has designed the building to feature many different dining options, including a patio area, an indoor-outdoor deck and indoor dining rooms.

The city of Myrtle Beach is working closely with the developer, because Coastal Dining has offered to add another 425 feet to the boardwalk so it can be connected. The deal required moving two alleys on the oceanfront lot, which will create a new municipal park on the north end of the 1400 block of Ocean Boulevard, providing another access to the more than 1-mile-long boardwalk.
