Three suspects in the thefts of car batteries in Surfside Beach are being held at J. Reuben Long Detention Center in lieu of $22,092 bond each, according to a news release from the Surfside Beach Police Department.

The release said the three -- William Shane Blackmon, 24, of Myrtle Beach; Tonya Ann Bowles, 37, of Conway; and Charles Malcolm Rheuark, 35, also of Conway -- were apprehended around noon Thursday and charged with burglary in the second degree, breaking and entering motor vehicle, criminal conspiracy, possession of criminal implements and larceny.

The three were reportedly frightened away from a residence in Surfside Beach as they were allegedly stealing multiple car batteries.

The news release said that a resident reported the attempted theft and gave police a description of the three, the vehicle they fled in and the direction they were traveling.

“We rarely enjoy the benefit of such a rock solid description and direction of travel report,” Surfside Police Chief Mike Frederick said.

Frederick credited the quick-thinking of the resident with the quick capture of the three alleged robbers.

Frederick said two of the suspects had been identified as persons of interest in a string of similar thefts that took place in the spring of 2011. Investigators had been unable to locate them for questioning prior to Thursday’s arrest, the release said.

The release asked that anyone with information about the suspects and their activities contact the Surfside Beach Police Department investigators at 913-6349. The source of any information will be confidential, the release said.

The police department is particularly interested in the transportation and sale of large quantities of car batteries which occurred prior to July 2011 and within the last few weeks, the release said.
