Whatever amount of success the Coastal Carolina University football team’s offense enjoys on each play in 2012, it will come quickly.
Promising the up-tempo style of play he employed over the past two seasons at Georgetown University, Dave Patenaude has been named the Chanticleers’ offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach by new head coach Joe Moglia.
Patenaude has 21 years of coaching experience, including the past two seasons as Georgetown’s offensive coordinator.
“The three things we pride ourselves on are: To play fast – so we’ll be some type of up-tempo offense with some things in the no-huddle. To play hard – we’ll try to run the ball and be a physical team and play with a certain amount of toughness. And to play smart – to be able to do multiple things out of multiple formations and execute at a high level.”
The change in jobs could be considered a lateral move, since Patenaude is taking a similar position at another Football Championship Series program. But he was attracted to CCU by the opportunity to work with Moglia, the former CEO of TD Ameritrade, the importance football holds in the community, and the climate and school’s location near the beach.
“I think there are chances at Coastal to do great things,” Patenaude said. “I believe the things have been put in place at Coastal to pursue titles, whether it be a Big South Championship or national championship.”
In his first year at Georgetown in 2010, Patenaude helped the Hoyas go 4-7 after a winless 2009 campaign and guided quarterback Scott Darby to a pair of Patriot League Offensive Player of the Week honors. Georgetown went 8-3 in 2011 and was the Patriot League runner-up.
Prior to his stint at Georgetown, Patenaude spent three seasons at Hofstra, the last two as the team’s offensive coordinator before the school dropped football. He served as the Pride’s quarterbacks coach and passing game coordinator in 2007, when Hofstra ranked 26th in the nation in passing offense and quarterback Bryan Savage ranked 15th in the FCS in total offense.
Patenaude was Holy Cross’ running backs coach in 2004 and ’05 before becoming the special teams coordinator and wide receivers coach in 2006. Holy Cross tailback Steve Silva led the nation in all-purpose yards in 2005.
Patenaude was the head coach at Division II New Haven (Conn.) in 2002 and ’03, going 5-15 record and producing two National Football League players. He spent four years at Columbia (1998-2001), coaching receivers and quarterbacks until he became offensive coordinator in 2001.
Patenaude also spent four seasons at Fordham, coaching tight ends, special teams, wide receivers and quarterbacks. He began his collegiate coaching career in 1991 as the United States Coast Guard Academy’s running backs coach and was a two-year assistant at Springfield (Mass.) College, where he also completed a master’s degree in physical education and sports management.
Patenaude was a three-year starting quarterback and free safety at Central Connecticut State before graduating in 1990.
“Dave has a proven track record at our level and has consistently produced top-level student-athletes,” Moglia said in a release. “… His offensive philosophy matched my vision of having an up-tempo, perimeter attack that has the quarterback making plays with both his arm and legs. I am looking forward to spring practice to see his plan executed.”
