After receiving positive reviews and praise for his work leading up to the East-West Shrine Game last week, former Coastal Carolina cornerback Josh Norman has decided to play in the Senior Bowl as well, hoping to continue vaulting his NFL draft stock.

Norman was initially only going to play in one of the postseason college all-star games, but he said over the phone Wednesday night that he made a late decision to join the Senior Bowl, which takes place Saturday in Mobile, Ala., and will be televised on the NFL Network.

“At the last minute, I kind of went with it,” he said. “... I thought about it. I pondered on it, and I was like, you know, this is football, this is what we do. I love to compete. These are the best [players] in the nation, supposed to be.

Similar stories:

“I just came off of one game feeling pretty good about that, and I feel pretty good about this one.”

Norman, a three-time all-Big South standout who finished his collegiate career this fall ranked second in conference history with 13 career interceptions, received considerable national buzz last week as a rising draft prospect.

“It’s pretty much what we said we were going to do -- just being confident in myself and going out there,” Norman said. “... I feel blessed to be in the position I am now.”

In other Coastal Carolina football news:

• Former Coastal Carolina defensive coordinator Curtis Walker has joined the staff at Western Carolina as the Catamounts’ linebackers coach, the program announced Wednesday.

Walker spent the past 10 seasons with the Chanticleers and coached a defensive unit that ranked third in the Big South Conference in scoring defense (27.9 points per game) and total defense (355.4 yards allowed per game) this past season.

He, along with most of the Chants’ 2011 coaching staff, was not retained when Joe Moglia took over as head coach, replacing David Bennett.

Pro golf

Myrtle Beach resident Yoshio Yamamoto shot a 3-under 69 and leads by one stroke at 7-under after the second round of the NGA Pro Golf Tour’s Carolina Winter Series Event at Long Bay Golf Club.

Jeremy Pope, who is from Pawleys Island, also shot 3-under on the day and climbed six spots to third, two strokes behind Yamamoto. The big mover was Myrtle Beach’s Roberto Diaz, who jumped 10 spots into a tie for ninth.

Little River’s Patrick Lunday was 1-over on the round and just made the cut at even par.
