It may be another year, but the Toast of the Coast Girls Cross Country Runner of the Year hasn’t changed.

Even with the high school cross country season over, North Myrtle Beach’s Benjamin Jenerette has been racking up first-place finishes in local races. That success follows a high school season in which she placed fifth in the Class AAA cross country state meet.

“I’m really happy to be here again this year,” Jenerette said about getting the honor. “I gave my best this season. I’m just really happy to win this title again.”

Jenerette finished in the top 5 at state for the second consecutive season. Her time was 19:03, which was a couple of seconds faster than her 2010 time, which earned her third place.

“I don’t see it as big negative because I ran faster this year than I did last year,” Jenerette said. “It just proves that the competition is getting better.”

North Myrtle Beach cross country coach Earl Main agreed that she made strides this past season.

“She improved 4 or 5 seconds from last year,” Main said. “She is about where she should be. Now that the springtime is coming, we are hoping she will be running the mile and 2 mile for the track team.”

Jenerette recently competed in the USTAF National Cross Country Meet and finished 30th overall … a feat not many athletes can claim.

“She has been the top runner in the county for years in 5k,” Main said.
