Man flown to hospital after 30-foot fall

A 60-year-old man was airlifted to a hospital after he fell 30 feet while cutting a tree branch, according to authorities.

The man was up a ladder that was leaning against the tree when he cut a branch that swung and knocked him to the ground, said Bob Beebe, spokesman with Midway Fire Rescue.

The incident happened around 11:30 a.m. at the man’s house on Martin Luther King Road in Pawleys Island.

A helicopter landed at the Pawleys Island Community Church to take the man to the Medical University of South Carolina in Charleston, Beebe said.

The man, who was alert and talking, suffered possible hip and femur fractures, Beebe said.

Two arrested on prostitution charges

Myrtle Beach police arrested a New York man and a Myrtle Beach woman Monday night on prostitution charges.

The two were arrested at about 7 p.m. Monday night at the beach at First Avenue in Myrtle Beach.

Eugene Rosman, 34, of Brooklyn, N.Y., was arrested on prostitution charges for offering a woman $25 for oral sex.

Amanda Wilson, 26, of Myrtle Beach was arrested on prostitution charges for agreeing to perform oral sex for $25.

Men with guns, sword break into home

Three men – one armed with a shotgun, another a handgun and the third with a sword – broke into a house in Longs Tuesday, according to police.

The three men forced their way into a house on the 9000 block of S.C. 90 and demanded money, according to Horry County Police Sgt. Robert Kegler, in a news release.

A resident of the house struggled with the men and was hit in the back of the head by one of the intruders. The suspects fled, possibly in a blue Toyota pickup truck, Kegler said.

As the suspects left shots were fired, police said.

No one was shot, Kegler said.

Man charged with robbery, kidnapping

Police arrested a Myrtle Beach man on Monday on charges of armed robbery and kidnapping.

Jonathan Manigault, 27, was arrested in connection with a Jan. 13 robbery at 305 Highway 15 in Myrtle Beach.

On Jan. 13 two people entered the store on Highway 15 as two customers were leaving.

The suspects showed a store employee their handguns and demanded money, according to a Myrtle Beach Police report.

The suspects made the employee lie on the floor and they zip tied his hands behind his back. Then another store employee walked out from a back room and the suspects made her lie on the ground and zip tied her hands behind her back, according to the report.

The suspects emptied the first store employee’s pockets and went through the store taking several things, including an unknown amount of money, according to the police report. The suspects left and a few minutes later a man walked in, found the victims and called the police.

Manigault was arrested and charged with two counts of kidnapping , and one count each of armed robbery and possession of a weapon during a violent crime, according to police.

Armed robbery at county Kangaroo store

Horry County Police are investigating an early morning armed robbery at a convenience store in Longs.

At about 2:50 a.m. police responded to a robbery at the Kangaroo store in the 7000 block of S.C. 90 in Longs.

A store employee told police that a man wearing a mask and a hooded sweatshirt came into the store, pulled out a shotgun and demanded money from the register, according to Horry County Police Sgt. Robert Kegler in a press release.

The suspect took the money and fled the store, he said.

There were no injuries and police don’t know exactly how much money the man stole, Kegler said.

Library launches ‘Let’s Talk About It’

Chapin Memorial Library’s series “Let’s Talk About It” this year focuses on “A South Carolina Sampler: Celebrating the S.C. Academy of Authors Inductees.”

Every Wednesday through Feb. 29, the focus will be on various South Carolina authors, including Charles W. Joyner, Mickey Spillane, Franklin Burroughs and Marian Wright Edelman.

The events start with coffee and social time at 10 a.m., followed by a lecture and discussion beginning at 10:30 a.m. at the library, 400 14th Ave. N., Myrtle Beach.

City celebrates its volunteers

The city of Myrtle Beach is holding a Volunteer Appreciation Luncheon to honor the 500 or so volunteers who serve on city boards, commissions and committees, at the library, in recreation programs and in public safety or fire prevention programs.

One will be tapped as the Volunteer of the Year.

The luncheon begins noon Wednesday at the Myrtle Beach Convention Center.
