Katie’s Closet, a store that provides prom dresses to needy girls, won’t have to close in Myrtle Beach thanks to a donation.
The money - officials with the charity wouldn’t say how much or who donated it - will cover the reduced rent, utilities, insurance and other expenses to run the store at The Market Common for the next few months as officials pursue more funding through grants and fund-raising.
The store had closed this week because Katie’s Project, which runs the store, didn’t have the money to pay the bills.
Katie’s Project, which provides prom attire for free to needy girls, has operated the store on Deville Street behind Gordon Biersch for about two years. It is open by appointment only and during special events such as Saturday’s “prom boutique.”
“We could not be more excited to be able to maintain our storefront location at The Market Common, especially since we are on the heels of prom season,” spokeswoman Sarah George said. “This is a huge relief to our organization and the schools we serve.”
Girls who need a prom dress can stop by the store for a “prom boutique” from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday where they can browse the store. Girls must meet a financial need and are urged to pre-register for Saturday’s event at www.katiesproject.org.
Last year, Katie’s Project helped several hundred needy girls in Horry, Georgetown and Marion counties get dresses for the prom.
