Chinese New Year celebration cancelled

Myrtle Beach’s signature Chinese New Year celebration held annually at the Franklin G. Burroughs-Simeon B. Chapin Art Museum since 2003 has been cancelled this year because the museum is commemorating its 15th anniversary with a yearlong calendar of events.

The Chinese New Year festivities, usually held late January or early February, will return to the museum’s roster next year, museum officials said.

Patricia Goodwin, the museum’s director, started the free event in appreciation of the Asian community here and beyond and wanted others to share in and learn about Chinese culture.

Participants learned how to eat with chopsticks, were given lessons in Tai Chi and engaged in other cultural activities.
