Texas Gov. Rick Perry may have announced Thursday in Charleston that he was dropping out of the presidential race, but his name will still be on the ballot when South Carolina voters head to the polls for the “First in the South” GOP primary.

Supporters can still cast votes for him, but it won’t matter as he’s effectively terminated his campaign.

Sandy Martin, director of Horry County Voter Registration, said Perry and other Republican hopefuls who have called it quits thus far will still have their names on the ballot.

“There’s been no formal paperwork done, to my knowledge, that these candidates have withdrawn,” she said.

So, despite the fact that Perry, Jon Huntsman, Herman Cain and Michele Bachmann have announced the end of their candidacies, until that paperwork is officially filed, people can still vote for them.

And those votes will be tabulated, Martin said, but won’t matter in the long run.

She added that Horry County residents who have voted for Perry via absentee ballot began calling the local voter registration office Thursday morning to see if there is anything they could do differently.

Unfortunately, there isn’t.

“We’ve got no way of knowing you voted for Perry,” Martin said.
