Katie’s Project, a charity that helps needy girls get dresses to wear to their prom, is closing its store at The Market Common because it can’t afford it anymore.
The shop, called Katie’s Closet on Deville Street behind Gordon Biersch, already has closed, but will have one last “prom boutique” from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday where girls can browse the store and select their prom attire. Girls must meet a financial need and are urged to pre-register for Saturday’s event at www.katiesproject.org.
“We are trying to take care of the needs of the girls for this prom season,” project coordinator Sarah George said.
The store opened at The Market Common about two years ago and operated by appointment only. The shopping complex gave the charity a discount on the rent, but the other expenses to run the store - utilities, insurance and maintenance - have added up as cash donations have dwindled because of the ongoing economic woes, George said.
“We can’t afford to stay there any longer,” she said.
The charity, which will move the dresses into a storage unit, is applying for grants to re-open a store and operate it, George said.
Meanwhile, the charity is headed into its busy season with proms right around the corner and is trying to find a rent-free space to set up shop for the next few months, George said. Last year, Katie’s Project helped several hundred needy girls in Horry, Georgetown and Marion counties get dresses for the prom.
