Drivers traveling around central Myrtle Beach on Monday should avoid the areas near the city’s Convention Center unless they are attending one of the many activities associated with the GOP Presidential debate, authorities said.

Police officers will direct traffic because several parking areas and a portion of Oak Street will be closed to general traffic, Myrtle Beach Police Capt. David Knipes said.

From 8 a.m. until midnight Monday, officers will close Oak Street from 21st Avenue North to north of Office Depot, which is about three blocks, Knipes said. People who work in the area adjacent to the Convention Center will be able to get to their jobs, but general traffic will not be permitted in those areas.

“Of course we do recommend that people avoid the area if possible during these times because of expected delays, a high volume of debate traffic and (other) issues,” Knipes said.
