County leaders to discuss investments
The start of the new year means new revenue for the Georgetown County Council and Tuesday council members may change the way they invest some of that money.
Property tax bills were sent out during the fourth quarter of 2011 and are due on Jan. 15. Councilman Jerry Oakley estimated that half of the county’s $60 million budget is made up of the revenue generated from property taxes.
During the council’s meeting Tuesday, members will vote on whether to participate in the South Carolina Local Government Investment Pool.
The program allows local government agencies, such as county councils, to invest money through the state treasurer’s office with the hope of getting a better return than if the agency invested the money on its own.
Oakley said the goal is to make the property tax revenue last throughout the entire year.
“It’s got to last all year,” he said. “You try to invest it and get the best return as you can.”
Also on Tuesday, the council will hear from members of the Parks and Recreation Dept. who will provide an update of the Recreation Master Plan. The plan includes several upgrades to the county parks.
