Nothing partisan about holding leaders accountable
In response to Ronald Litz’s indignation at The Sun News’ “liberal bias,” (Dec. 28 letter, “Sun came up? Paper must be bashing Haley”), the simple fact that people like Mr. Litz discount any criticism of an extremely corrupt politician is why someone such as Nikki Haley is able to continue to drag both the state of South Carolina and the reputation of actual decent Republicans through the mud.
There’s nothing partisan about expecting your politicians to be transparent with their actions, especially when they have been called into question from both sides of the aisle. If some readers are content with her leadership, that is their prerogative, but until we get some real answers about the deletion of e-mails and the S.C. port, I’m afraid it will be a while before “it’s a great day in South Carolina.”

Deficit spending
Thanks, but I can think for myself
This fiscal conservative was alarmed and discouraged to discover that, alas, I am both intellectually dishonest and evolutionarily lacking with regard to thought process in general (Dec. 26 letter by Terry Munson, “In defense of thinking”).
Upon further review, however, by merely substituting the phrase “deficit spending” in lieu of each appearance of the word “thinking” within the referenced submission, the piece does, indeed, render one appreciably less likely to be perceived as a refugee from reality.
Certainly, after digesting the submission of the “thinking man,” we should each be beneficiaries of an enlightened thought process; I am now capable of identifying clueless knucklehead demagogues attempting to brainwash me.

Christmas spirit
Thanks to angel for paying for groceries
Thank you, Christmas Angel, for your smile, hug and paying for my groceries at Kroger’s on the morning of Dec. 23. I looked for you in the parking lot to thank you, but you were nowhere to be seen. You have a very sweet spirit.
God bless you.

Gambling could be boon for S.C.
Re Dec. 25 letter by Patricia Milley, “Don’t allow gambling in S.C.”
She should think that it is a personal choice to gamble just as it is to drink, smoke, lie or go to church.
Gambling (gaming) will stimulate the S.C. economy, help the state out of debt and create thousands of jobs.
At a time when people are losing their homes, their marriages, everything they worked hard to get, gaming coming to S.C. is one part of the puzzle to get this state back on its feet and people employed once again.
So when you go to the polls to vote for gaming, vote yes. Help S.C. out of it economic problem.

Cop killers
must pay
I just finished reading the article on officer Joe McGarry and the retrial of his murderer.
I never had the opportunity to meet Joe, but I did have the great fortune to partake in a chili cook-off fundraiser for the family of Joe alongside Sgt. Randy Fisher as well as many police, fire and residents of North Myrtle Beach.
Being the parents of a Brooklyn, N.Y., police officer, our heart goes out to Joe’s family as well as to the family of the recent killing of New York’s finest officer Peter Figoski while answering a call in the streets of New York.
The killing of a cop warrants no option on lesser charges. “You kill a cop, you die.” No exceptions.
Greg Hembree, I know that you will succeed in the retrial and hopefully set an example to those who are next to pull the trigger.
