Family waiting for justice in Myrtle Beach campground stabbing

SHELBY, N.C. | The Fitch family spent Christmas without their son.

More than four months after Dalton Fitch was stabbed to death at a Myrtle Beach campground, his family is waiting for some kind of resolution in the teen’s killing.

They could be waiting for a while.

“We don’t have anything (court dates) scheduled right now,” Heather von Herrmann, Horry County (S.C.) assistant solicitor, said Dec. 20, adding that there hasn’t yet been any discussion about whether the case will be resolved or be brought to trial.

Dalton Fitch, who would have been a senior at Crest High School, died in August after police say his schoolmate, Adam Dwiggins, stabbed him after a fight with other campers. Police charged Adam Dwiggins’ mother, Kathy Dwiggins, with hindering the police investigation into the murder.

“We’re just doing the best we can,” Tracy Fitch, Dalton’s mother, said just before Christmas. “(The holiday) just won’t be the same. I don’t get to spend Christmas with my son.”

Dalton Fitch’s death shocked the Cleveland County community, with hundreds of people attending the teen’s funeral on what would have been the first day of his senior year. Many people have called 17-year-old Dalton a hero for chasing after Adam Dwiggins when Dwiggins allegedly started a fight with a girl at the campground.

Both teens were students at Crest High School.

Since Dalton’s death, his friends and family have come together to honor his memory by creating T-shirts, drawing hearts on their wrists and holding a spaghetti dinner benefit. Dalton’s memory was also honored at Crest High in the school’s memorial garden.
