A low-level jet stream and heavy rain created wind gusts greater than 40 mph across the Myrtle Beach area Tuesday.

The area experienced wind gusts up to 48 mph Tuesday from North Myrtle Beach to Georgetown and received .17 of an inch of rain -- bringing the year’s rainfall total to 32.93 inches, which is 19.08 inches below the normal, according to weather officials.

National Weather Service officials said they received no reports of damages in the area, though high winds uprooted a tree and sent it crashing into the outfield fence around one of the ball fields at East Bay Park in Georgetown Tuesday afternoon.

Despite Tuesday’s strong winds and rain, it should be “quiet for the next several days” going into the New Year’s holiday weekend, said Michael Caropolo, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service in Wilmington, N.C.

“It will be sunny days and mainly clear nights,” Caropolo said.

Temperatures will be in the high 50s Wednesday and Thursday and around the low 60s Friday, Saturday and Sunday – New Year’s Day, according to the National Weather Service.

Nights are expected to be mostly clear with low temperatures around the 40s.
