Deputy shoots stabbing victim, assailant
Charges are pending against a Leland, N.C., woman after authorities say she stabbed her husband and was shot by Brunswick County deputies, according to a news release.
Members of the N.C. State Bureau of Investigations are investigating the incident that occurred Monday, said Del Routh, public information officer for the Brunswick County Sheriff’s Office.
Charges of assault and domestic violence are pending against 43-year-old Cassey Thomas, who was shot during the incident, Routh said.
Deputies were called around 10:15 p.m. Monday to Lansan Lane near Leland for a reported assault with a deadly weapon.
When deputies arrived at the home, they found Thomas stabbing her 48-year-old husband, according to a police report.
When Thomas failed to drop her knife, Sgt. Brian Tully fired two shots.
One bullet struck Thomas in the abdomen, but another shot hit the victim in his leg.
The man also suffered a stab wound to his back.
The injuries to Thomas and her husband are not considered life-threatening.
A criminal investigation into the stabbing is being conducted, but an internal investigation into the deputy shooting the stabbing victim is being conducted by the Brunswick County Sheriff’s Office of Professional Standards.

N.C. man commits suicide while jailed
An N.C. man died of an apparent suicide while jailed in Brunswick County last week, according to authorities.
Steven Allan Myers, 21, of Cary, N.C., was discovered dead in his cell of an apparent suicide on Friday, said Del Routh, public information officer for the Brunswick County Sheriff’s Office.
Myers was booked into the Brunswick County Detention Center on Dec. 20 on charges of assault on a female, communicating threats and two counts of assault by strangulation, Routh said. He was being held on $200,500 bond.
The N.C. State Bureau of Investigations is investigating Myers’ death.

Store clerk charged in checkout dispute
Myrtle Beach police charged a department store clerk with assault after a customer said the clerk hit her with a box during a dispute over merchandise pricing, according to a police report.
Caren Parmley, 33, was charged with third-degree assault and battery after officers were called about 7:20 p.m. Monday to Ross department store on Seaboard St., police said.
A 49-year-old woman told police she was checking out and had issues with the pricing of some merchandise, according to the report.
She told officers that she removed several items from her bag and wanted Parmley, who was the clerk, to bag the items again.
The woman said Parmley refused and began to check out the next person in line, according to the report.
The customer said she took out her camera phone and began to photograph the items.
When she began to photograph the items, the woman said, Parmley took a box and struck her hands and phone, according to the report.
The woman said she took her items and went to a manager.
Parmley told police the victim had several issues with the price of items and had taken them out of the bag numerous times, according to the report.
Parmley said she told the customer she was not bagging the items anymore and the victim whipped out the phone and started taking pictures.
Parmley said she just pushed the phone away to prevent the customer from taking her picture, according to the report.
Parmley told police she was unsure if she struck the victim on the hands or the phone.
Officers reviewed video surveillance that showed Parmley take a pink box and pushed the victim’s hands away twice, according to the report.

Road section to close for construction
Construction crews will close a portion of Sixth Avenue South in North Myrtle Beach to install new sewer lines beginning Wednesday, according to Pat Dowling, city spokesman.
The closure will occur west of U.S. 17 and the road will be closed to all vehicle traffic, Dowling said. In addition to new sewer lines, crews will do work related to adding left-hand turn lanes, new traffic light mast arms, and other amenities to the intersection.
The road is expected to reopen sometime in mid-January.

Local gas prices lower
The average retail gasoline prices in Myrtle Beach decreased 2.1 cents per gallon last week to average $3.03 per gallon Sunday, according to MyrtleBeachGasPrices.com.
With the change in gas prices in Myrtle Beach during the past week prices on Sunday were 21.5 cents per gallon higher than a year ago. But prices were 5.8 cents per gallon lower than a month ago, the website said.
The national average has increased 0.8 cents per gallon in the last week to $3.23 per gallon, according to the website. The national average has decreased 8.9 cents per gallon during the last month and is 21.3 cents per gallon higher than a year ago.
