An 11-member Little River Blue Crab Festival committee appointed by Horry County Council is the recommendation the full council will discuss further at the Jan. 10 Committee of the Whole meeting.

On Monday, a special meeting of the administrative committee was held to discuss ways the county could help the Blue Crab Festival in the future.

“Council and staff are wanting additional information from the current organizers on what exact assistance or level of assistance they would like from the county as well,” said Lisa Bourcier, Horry County spokeswoman, via e-mail. “All these items will be discussed at the COW.”

At the Dec. 13 County Council meeting, Councilman Harold Worley – whose District 1 includes Little River – relayed a request from festival volunteers and organizers that the county step in to help ensure its long-term existence.

A letter dated Nov. 10 was sent by festival chairman Allen E. Lee and vendor chairman Hubert Bullard and stated 2012’s 31st Annual Blue Crab Festival has been canceled, and would return the following year.

After that letter surfaced, Worley said the 2012 festival would happen, and the Little River Chamber of Commerce would sponsor it.
