Newt Gingrich still leads Mitt Romney in South Carolina, but U.S. Rep. Ron Paul is surging in the conservative state that will hold its Republican presidential primary Jan. 21.
Gingrich leads all candidates with 38 percent, followed by Romney, the former Massachusetts governor, with 21 percent, according to the Palmetto Poll from Clemson University.
But Paul, the Texas congressman, jumped to third place with 10 percent, the only other candidate in double figures. That’s up from 3 percent he had in the same poll a month ago, and up from 4 percent in the Winthrop Poll released Dec. 6.
