The impact of Jesus

During the month of December, the one individual who will be talked about more, thought about more, and honored more than anyone else – and deservedly so – is the one called Jesus. There is something about that name. The name Jesus means “Savior.” That’s the name God, the Father, chose and gave to the angel for Mary, the mother, to call him.

Jesus came to earth to identify with struggling humanity by being born in a barn and raised in humbling circumstances. He spent his life serving others. Many have come before and since and made great sacrifices and contributions to society, but their efforts all pale in comparison to the Son of God. He came to earth as a common man and died for the sins of the world. To think that God, the Father, would love us so much, that he would create us, then give us the ability to choose whether to follow him or not, and then provide the sacrifice – his unique son – for our sins, is priceless. As the Christian hymn proclaims: Jesus could have called 10,000 angels in his defense, but he died alone for you and me.

If Jesus had just come and died as men do, we would still be without hope for our sin problem. But he was raised from the dead to be our victorious Savior and Lord. Now, everyone who re-enacts this plan in their life can be saved. These Jesus people, called Christians (Christ-like individuals), strive to live like Jesus in their daily walk.

You will note, in this month of December, that people tend to be more loving, giving and peaceful because they are thinking about Jesus. What is it about this being that causes such a wonderful life and response to a cold, hard and often cruel world? Why is it that average men, women, seniors, young adults or teens who live next door, work with you, go to school with you, and may even be living in your house, act so differently? These Christians are sweeter, kinder, more dependable, more forgiving and more joyful year round, 24/7, than anyone else on the planet. Just ask them what it is about their faith that gives them peace on earth and good will toward men? Don’t be surprised if they simply, humbly and gratefully say, “Jesus.”
