Unattended tot leads to arrest

A Myrtle Beach woman was charged with neglecting her 2-year-old child after police say the boy was left in a vehicle in a Surfside Beach area Wal-Mart parking lot, according to a police report.

Gergana Ilieva Dzhorgova, 32, was charged with unlawful neglect of a child and is being held at J. Reuben Long Detention Center on $1,000 bond, according to jail records.

Officers were called about 5:30 p.m. Monday to the store at 2751 Beaver Run Blvd. for a child alone inside a vehicle, according to the report. When officers arrived, they learned Dzhorgova had just got into the vehicle and was about to leave.

A witness told police he was parked next to the vehicle and saw the child, according to the report. The witness said he stood by the car where the child was at for about eight minutes.

But Dzhorgova told officers she left the boy alone for about five minutes and the vehicle was locked, according to the report. Dzhorgova told police she was buying diapers for the boy because he wet himself and that she left him in the vehicle because he had wet clothing.

Crews respond to apartment fire

Area firefighters were called to an apartment building off Palmetto Pointe Boulevard early Wednesday for a fire inside an apartment, according to Horry County Fire Rescue.

Firefighters were called at 7:26 a.m. Wednesday to 218 Ivystone Drive for the fire, said Leslie Yancey, spokeswoman for Horry County Fire Rescue. Firefighters were able to contain the fire to the kitchen area of the apartment and learned the fire was started accidentally by someone who was cooking in the apartment.

No one was hurt during the incident, but an adult and some children living in the apartment were displaced by the fire, which damaged the kitchen area, Yancey said.

Firefighters from departments in Myrtle Beach and Murrells Inlet-Garden City also responded to the fire to provide mutual aid to Horry County crews.
