Police have charged a Georgetown man for allegedly pointing a shotgun at his mother and burning a cat to death in a charcoal grill.
Chance Godwin Adams, 24, of 565 Black River Road, Georgetown, is charged with breach of peace, second-degree assault and battery, animal cruelty and use of a firearm during the commission of a violent crime, according to the police report.
Adams remained in the Georgetown County Detention Center Monday with his bail set at $80,000, said Capt. Nelson Brown of the Georgetown Police Department.
Police responded to Black River Road Saturday after getting a call from the suspect’s mother saying that Adams pointed the shotgun at her while in the driveway of their home, and he also was armed with a pistol, the report stated.
When officers found Adams, he was wearing “odd-matching clothes with ski goggles.” The guns weren’t in his possession, and he refused to tell police where they were.
A semi-automatic rifle was found in the kitchen and taken into evidence, according to the arrest report. No other weapons were found.
As officers searched the rear of the home for the guns, a dead kitten was found in a charcoal grill, the report stated. It appeared as though the animal was placed into the grill, which was still warm to the touch.
The mother said the cat was a stray that had been staying with them. She added that a family dog last seen with Adams is missing.
“The dog’s collar-harness was found by Adams’ sister covered in what she said was blood,” the report stated.
Nelson said Monday afternoon they aren’t sure about the dog’s condition or whereabouts.
Adam’s mother said her son suffered “some kind of psychotic episode.”
